RATINGS: Broadchurch Back On Top In The Monday Night Clash Of The Crime Dramas

Broadchurch was the slot winner this week in the Monday night 9pm clash between the ITV thriller and the long-running BBC One forensics drama Silent Witness.

Broadchurch attracted 5.6 million viewers (22.7%) over Silent Witness at 5.5m (22.5%). The figures represented a drop for both shows last night, Broadchurch dropping 100,000 viewers on episode 3, Silent Witness losing 400,000 compared to last week.

Last night's audience figures were the lowest so far for the ITV show which opened to 7.6 m watching live, climbing to 10.9m via catch up viewings.

Elsewhere, David Starkey's Magna Carta  drew 1.5m (6.1%) to BBC Two, The Undateables on Channel 4 was watched by 2.2m (8.8%), and Celebrity Big Brother on Channel 5 brought in 2.6m (10.4%).

REVIEW: Broadchurch Episode 4 - Old Secrets, New Suspects

As the second series of Broadchurch reaches its halfway point, new twists and turns have thrown both cases wide open. In Sandbrook, one of the protagonists has lost his alibi. And in Broadchurch a malevolent presence returns to place someone else at the crime scene. As Alec Hardy (David Tennant) and Ellie Miller (Olivia Colman) must trust one case to the hands of the barristers, they increasingly turn their attention to shedding some light on the other.

The trial of Joe Miller (Matthew Gravelle) continues, and the episode seems to have the balance better this time with less of a focus on the protracted questioning sequences, and more on the behind the scenes work, as both Sharon Bishop (Marianne Jean-Baptiste) and Jocelyn Knight (Charlotte Rampling) work to arm themselves for the continued conflict. “It’s a game to them,” Lee Ashworth (James D'Arcy) tells Ellie, and from Abby Thompson’s (Phoebe Waller-Bridge) gleeful speculation about who else they could put in the frame it does l…

REVIEW: Broadchurch: Over The Side: A Series Two Original Short Story

The latest installment from Erin Kelly in her collection of short stories about Broadchurch focuses on Alec Hardy's life at the beginning of the Sandbrook case. Told through the eyes of his then wife, Tess Henchard, the story dates back to April 2012. The tale opens with Tess involved in a clandestine meeting in a lay-by with her secret lover, Dave, a colleague of both herself and Alec at the South Mercia police station where they work.
We've only just been introduced to Tess on the TV series, but this book provides an in depth look at her character and the feelings of guilt that she encounters when trying to hide her affair from a husband she's fallen out of love with and her feelings of contempt due to the fact that she believes he hasn't even noticed.

Alec is as we know him, work driven and apparently emotionally shut off. He is leading the case for two missing girls in Sandbrook and just three days in to the enquiry the case becomes a murder hunt after he discovers …
