UK: Broadcast Dates For David Tennant Real Crime Drama Des Revealed

Image
Des, the three-part drama about the arrest and trial of serial killer Dennis Nilsen, will air on ITV from mid-September, it has been revealed today. The series, based on the book Killing For Company by Brian Masters, will be shown over three nights from Monday 14th to Wednesday 16th September, according to The Big Issue magazine.

David Tennant plays Dennis Nilsen in the drama, the apparently quiet and solitary Jobcentre employee known as Des, who was responsible for the murder of up to fifteen men and boys in his two North London flats. In his Big Issue interview, David explains how a rise in poverty and homelessness at the time of Nilsen's crimes made it easy for him to prey on his lost and desperate victims. He says:
“Nilsen shouldn’t have been able to get away with it for as long as he did. And we have to wonder why that happened. And that’s got something to do with the fact that he was preying on people that society had, to a greater or lesser extent, turned its back on.”

NEW INTERVIEW: David Tennant Talks To The Big Issue On Society, Help For The Poorest And The Dark Shadow Of A Serial Killer

Image
David has been talking to the latest issue of The Big Issue about his forthcoming role as serial killer Dennis Nilsen in the new true crime drama, Des.
The new three part drama, which David also executively produces, is based on Killing For Company, the biography of Nilsen written by Brian Masters which includes conversations with the killer who would go by the name of 'Des'.

David explains how he wants the series to be a memorial for the victims of Nilsen and not something that would glamourise the killer.

“It was something we talked about every day on set. You don’t want to give him control of the narrative and you don’t want to be celebrating the horror - you want to be memorialising the victims. That’s the important difference. This is about people who lost their lives, and this is about the failure of society.”
No murders are shown. The story starts on the day the police first talks to Nilsen. This decision was made to avoid telling the story based only on Nilsen’s recollec…

NEW INTERVIEW: David Tennant On Playing The “Appalling Yet Fascinating” Serial Killer Dennis Nilsen For New ITV True Crime Series, Des

Image
David Tennant's new true crime drama Des will be coming to ITV in September and earlier this year David spoke to The Telegraph about the series and gave an insight into playing one of the UK's most notorious serial killers, Dennis Nilsen.
The new three part drama, which David also executively produces, is based on Killing For Company, the biography of Nilsen written by Brian Masters which includes conversations with the killer who would go by the name of 'Des'. In the early days of his career David Tennant moved down to London from Scotland and rented a flat in Crouch End. One day his flatmate gave him a book. “The person I was lodging with said, ‘You should read this – it happened nearby.’ ” The book was Killing for Company by Brian Masters, the story of the serial killer Dennis Nilsen. “I remember reading it and just being appalled,” says Tennant. “And intrigued.” But the “intrigue” Tennant felt – indeed the intrigue that made Brian Masters contact Nilsen in prison and pr…
