The first two episodes of David Tennant’s new comedy series, Staged, premiere on BBC One in the UK tonight at 10.45pm.
Staged sees David Tennant and Michael Sheen playing fictional versions themselves. In Staged the pair were due to star in a production of Six Characters in Search of an Author in the West End. The pandemic has put paid to that, but their director (Simon Evans - also playing himself) is determined not to let the opportunity pass him by. He knows how big a chance this is for him and turns his attention to cajoling his stars into rehearsing over the internet.
All they need to do is read the first scene, but throughout the series they come up against a multitude of oppositional forces: distraction, boredom, home-schooling and their own egos..
The series takes on the challenges of creating a drama in lockdown, on stage and off, with a line-up including Georgia Tennant, Lucy Eaton and Anna Lundberg. The show will also have a selection of guest stars including Nina Sosanya, with more to be confirmed in due course.
The Staged production team followed the latest government guidelines on Covid-19 to ensure that the series was made safely and responsibly, using a combination of self-shooting and video conferencing technology, all in accordance with the latest protocols.
Based on an original idea by Simon Evans and Phin Glynn - Staged is written and directed by Evans and is an Infinity Hill/GCB Films production for BBC One. It was commissioned by Charlotte Moore, Director BBC Content. The producers are Phin Glynn, Victor Glynn and Georgia Tennant. David Tennant and Michael Sheen are also executive producers of the series. Executive Producers for Infinity Hill are Axel Kuschevatzky and Cindy Teperman and for GCB, Geoff Iles.
Episode 1 Cachu Hwch
David Tennant and Michael Sheen were due to put on a play in the West End before the production was put on hold because of the pandemic. The play’s director, Simon Evans, is worried that his big break is about to pass him by and tries to convince his doubtful actors to carry on rehearsals online.
Episode 2 Up to No Good
With rehearsals due to begin, Simon goes missing. Michael and David embrace the opportunity to skive off. Georgia is due to deliver her novel to her agent and asks David to stand in and help with the kids. Michael is caught breaking the law.
Inspired by Georgia’s writing, David is tempted to start a new endeavour.
