PRESS REVIEW ROUND UP: Staged Wows Critics With Its Humorous And Relatable Charm

David Tennant’s new comedy series, Staged, premiered on BBC One last night and has wowed critics with its funny and relatable charm.

Staged sees David Tennant and Michael Sheen playing fictional versions themselves. In Staged the pair were due to star in a production of Six Characters in Search of an Author in the West End. The pandemic has put paid to that, but their director (Simon Evans - also playing himself) is determined not to let the opportunity pass him by. He knows how big a chance this is for him and turns his attention to cajoling his stars into rehearsing over the internet.
All they need to do is read the first scene, but throughout the series they come up against a multitude of oppositional forces: distraction, boredom, home-schooling and their own egos..
The series takes on the challenges of creating a drama in lockdown, on stage and off, with a line-up including Georgia Tennant, Lucy Eaton and Anna Lundberg. The show will also have a selection of guest stars including Nina Sosanya, with more to be confirmed in due course.
The Staged production team followed the latest government guidelines on Covid-19 to ensure that the series was made safely and responsibly, using a combination of self-shooting and video conferencing technology, all in accordance with the latest protocols.
Based on an original idea by Simon Evans and Phin Glynn - Staged is written and directed by Evans and is an Infinity Hill/GCB Films production for BBC One. It was commissioned by Charlotte Moore, Director BBC Content. The producers are Phin Glynn, Victor Glynn and Georgia Tennant. David Tennant and Michael Sheen are also executive producers of the series.
Staged is streaming now on BBC iPlayer and continues on Wednesdays on BBC One.

Tennant and Sheen are excellent, perennially, even when performing as themselves to their own laptops. Here, joined by Evans and by their real-life spouses – the actors Georgia Tennant and Anna Lundberg – they are on top form, crackling with snide chemistry. The whole thing is a treat. Watch it.”
