Starting today, BBC Radio 4 Extra will repeat the eight hour radio adaptation of Vasily Grossman's epic novel Life And Fate. David Tennant and Kenneth Branagh are among the cast of the thirteen-part drama, based on a work that, at the time of its publication in 1960, Soviet authorities considered to be so dangerous that the manuscript itself was arrested.
Set against the Battle of Stalingrad, the novel charts the fate of both a nation and a family in the turmoil of war. David Tennant plays Nikolai Krymov, a commissar, posted to
Stalingrad. Kenneth Branagh plays nuclear physicist Viktor, who flees Moscow with his wife Lyuda (Greta Scacchi). The cast also includes Harriet Walter, Adrian Scarborough, Ralph Ineson, Raquel Cassidy and Freddie Fox. The series was originally broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 2011.
The series starts today at 4pm, with episodes throughout next week. David appears in episodes 3, 7, 10 and 11. You can listen from anywhere in the world via the
BBC Radio website.
