VIDEO: Watch David Tennant Accept The WhatsOnStage Best Actor In A Play Award

Last night saw David Tennant win the Best Actor In A Play award for his role as DJ in the Patrick Marber play, Don Juan In Soho, at the prestigious WhatsOnStage Awards.
However, David couldn't be there in person as he was attending the premiere of his latest film, You, Me And Him in Glasgow, and so he sent along his son Ty to collect the award on his behalf and made an acceptance speech video for the audience at the Prince Of Wales Theatre in London.

Thanking the theatregoers who had voted for him David said:
"I'm so chuffed to be winning this for Don Juan in Soho. It was an amazing experience working with the amazing Patrick Marber, the peerless Adrian Scarborough, and a fantastic cast of brilliant, talented, enthusiastic, wonderful people."

"It was a real privilege getting to do a play about Soho in Soho, especially over a summer when London suffered a couple of terrible attacks, the play itself began to feel like a real celebration of London, and indeed one of the real crown jewels of London, which is theatreland. The WhatsOnStage Awards is such a glorious celebration of that."

It is the fourth time that David has picked up the Best Actor In A Play award, having previously been awarded for his roles in Hamlet, Richard II and Much Ado About Nothing.

Collecting the award on stage Ty told the audience:
"My dad has always been, since I was a child, my hero. For Doctor Who to become my dad..."

The WhatsOnStage Awards are the only major theatre awards to be decided completely through the votes of theatre goers themselves. Other winners announced at the ceremony at the Prince of Wales Theatre in London tonight included OLivia Colman (Best Actress in a Play, Mosquitoes), Juliet Stevenson (Best Supporting Actress in a Play, Hamlet) and the ferryman (Best New Play).
