David Tennant Wins WhatsOnStage Best Actor Award For Don Juan In Soho

David Tennant was a winner again at the WhatsOnStage Theatre Awards tonight, picking up the prize for Best Actor In A Play for his performance in Don Juan In Soho. David was a previous winner for his perfomance in Richard II in 2013.

David played the title role in the revival of Patrick Marber's play, an update of the Moliere morality play Dom Juan. The production was directed by Marber himself and played at Wyndham's Theatre in Soho between March and June 2017. Critics at the time praised David's nimble and empathetic performance and described the production as fantastic, entertaining and unflagging.

Due to his attendance at the premiere of his new movie You, Me And Him in Glasgow, David was unable to collect the award himself, but sent a videoed acceptance speech.

"It was a real privilege doing a play about Soho in Soho," he said. "The WhatsOnStage Awards are a wonderful evening celebrating everything that's good about London theatre and I'm so chuffed to be winning this for Don Juan in Soho, thank you all so much."

The award was collected on David's behalf by his son Ty, who said, "My dad has always been, since I was a child, my hero. For Doctor Who to become my dad..."

The WhatsOnStage Awards are the only major theatre awards to be decided completely through the votes of theatre goers themselves. Other winners announced at the ceremony at the Prince of Wales Theatre in London tonight included OLivia Colman (Best Actress in a Play, Mosquitoes), Juliet Stevenson (Best Supporting Actress in a Play, Hamlet) and the ferryman (Best New Play).
