Shanghai International Film Festival Opens Today: Mad To Be Normal Screening In Competition



The 20th Shanghai International Film Festival opens today featuring the best of Asian and international filmmaking talent and running until June 26th. The programme this year includes David Tennant latest feature film, Mad To Be Normal, which has been entered into the prestigious Golden Goblet Award. In total, the festival will screen around 400 feature films and has also added a short films section.


The nominees for the Golden Goblet Award were announced at the Cannes Film Festival last month, and are as follows:
  • Yasuo Furuhat’s Reminiscence (Japan)
  • Dave McCary’s Brigsby Bear (US)
  • Cătălin Saizescu’s Fault Condition (Romania)
  • Maciej Pieprzyca’s I’m A Killer (Poland)
  • Ivan Bolotnikov’s Kharms (Russia)
  • Robert Mullan’s Mad To Be Normal (UK)
  • Markus Goller’s My Brother Simple (Germany)
Mad To Be Normal sees David Tennant star as the notorious Scottish psychiatrist R.D. Laing who, during the late 1960s, set up a revolutionary medication-free community in London for the treatment of patients experiencing psychosis. The film was written and directed by Robert Mullan and also stars Elisabeth Moss, Michael Gambon and Gabriel Byrne. 

The film will be screening three times over the duration of the film festival:

June 20th at 13.30 - TianShan Cinema-HongQiao Art Center Flagship Store
June 21st at 10.30 - SFC ShangHai Film Art Center
June 24th at 18.30 - HuBei Cinema

Mad To Be Normal premiered in Glasgow on February 26th and is currently screening across the UK in selected cinemas.
