David Tennant was in the running for a major role in the iconic UK comedy series The Office, it has emerged. If cast he would have been playing Neil Godwin, boss to David Brent (Ricky Gervais).
Patrick Baladi, who actually played Godwin, made the revelation as he launched his new art and antiques business at The Malthouse Emporium in Stroud. He says that he almost didn't get the role which was hotly contested by a number of actors. He names David Tennant as one of those competing for the part alongside him.
"Every actor going was after that part," says Patrick. "It was the second series and it was quite clear to
actors what a great show it was. It was fantastic to be able to go into it, and
have Martin [Freeman] as an ally and friend and also to be a bit brave and take a few
risks. They auditioned me four times. They liked me as an actor, but thought I was maybe too
good looking, too posh."
So, no David Tennant in The Office (although he did later make a cameo appearance in Ricky Gervais' next series, Extras), but here's our favourite jelly-based clip nonetheless:
The BBC series was written by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant and ran between 2001 and 2003. It also starred Martin Freeman, Lucy Davis and Mackenzie Crook and inspired a highly successful US version.
Patrick will next be seen in Marcella, a new series for ITV starring Anna Friel.
