Movie production and sales company GSP Studios will be taking David Tennant's newest feature Mad To Be Normal to the European Film Market in Berlin this week. The Yorkshire-based team recently added the R. D. Laing biopic to their sales roster and will be presenting it to the attendees of the year's first major film market with the aim of securing more distribution deals worldwide.
Mad To Be Normal tells the story of R.D. Laing, the renowned psychiatrist and innovative thinker who brought revolutionary new 'anti-psychiatry' concepts to the treatment of people with mental health problems. During the 1960s and 70s he set up a controversial commune at Kingsley Hall in East London where he began experimental treatments that included self-healing processes through freedom of thought and actions and the use of drugs such as LSD. Needless to say, the mainstream psychiatric community were horrified by his work. However, Laing himself became internationally known as a hero of the counterculture.
David Tennant plays Laing himself while the cast also includes Michael Gambon, Elisabeth Moss and Gabriel Byrne. Filming began last week and will continue on locations throughout Yorkshire and London until April.
The European Film Market begins tomorrow and continues until February 19th.
Mad To Be Normal is expected to have a UK release later this year.
