The BBC are apparently keen to produce a third series of the
award winning comedy W1A.
The spoof fly-on-the-wall documentary by John Morton is the
follow up to the Olympics-based series Twenty Twelve and follows some of the
characters as they take on new roles within the BBC. Hugh Bonneville and
Jessica Hynes star alongside Jason Watkins, Sarah Parish and Nina Sosanya while
David Tennant provides a wry voiceover.
Talking to the Radio Times website, BBC Two controller Kim
Shillinglaw responded to rumours that the BBC were shelving the show among
concerns that it might prove too politically sensitive during the corporation’s charter renewal next year. Rather, she said, they were excited at
the prospect of another series of the “gorgeous, sharp and very funny” show, but
it all depended on Morton himself.
"It's all about the writer,” she said “When John
Morton's ready we will be ready."
John Morton has already indicated that he would love to set his new series during the process of charter renewal. Even though the show itself would never take a position, he said, it would be useful to be able to put particular pressures on his characters.
Production will also depend on the availability of the show’s in-demand stars.
At present there is no mention of who would narrate the third series when it
goes ahead, though as David Tennant has narrated both series of Twenty Twelve
and of W1A, it would be reasonable to expect his return too.
