United
In February 1958 a flight leaving Munich Airport in wintery conditions crashed on its third attempt to take off. On board were the much loved Manchester United team known as the 'Busby Babes', a squad of talented young players under manager Matt Busby, who were returning home after a European Cup fixture. Tragically a number of players, including rising star Duncan Edwards, were killed in the crash, as were a number of journalists, club staff, air crew and other passengers while many more were injured. The drama follows events after the tragedy and the recovery of the club and its players, including the young Bobby Charlton who came close to giving up the sport altogether. Key to the team’s recovery was the inspired leadership of its coach Jimmy Murphy who, refusing to let the club fade away, reluctantly stepped into the limelight to rebuild the team and lead it back to success in honour off those lost in the crash.
United was written by Chris Chibnall and directed by James Strong, the team behind the award winning Broadchurch. It originally aired on BBC Two in April 2011.
