WhatsOnStage have now released a video clip of David Tennant's full acceptance speech from the WhatsOnStage Awards last month. David picked up the Best Actor in a Play honour for his leading performance in the Royal Shakespeare Company's Richard II in the ceremony that took place on 15th February. The WhatsOnStage Awards are the only major theatre awards that are decided completely by the votes of members of the public.
During his speech David praised the current state of British theatre and, in this election year, urged politicians to continue to fund the arts.
"British theatre has this unerring knack of reinventing and reinvigorating itself and staying the best theatre in the world year after year after year. An event like this just celebrates that in the most appropriate and wonderful way. We're rightly proud of all of our grades of arts, " he said. "But we have to protect them. Any pound spent on the creative industries is not an expense, it's an investment. The arts bring in so much more money to this economy than they take out of it."
