David Tennant Review Of 2014: JANUARY

Over the next twelve days we’ll be taking a look back over what David’s been up to over the last year, one month per day. Typically it’s been another busy year for David, as he performed on stage as well as filming two major TV series.

January 2014

Richard II
The year opened with David continuing his highly acclaimed run as King Richard in the Royal Shakespeare Company production of Richard II at the Barbican Theatre in London. On 8th January, David, along with director Gregory Doran and fellow cast members, took part in a post-show talk. The RSC confirmed their plans to release a DVD of the live recording made in November 2013 later in the year. Richard II closed on 25th January.

Dolphins: Spy In The Pod

The two-part John Downer productions series Dolphins: Spy In The Pod  narrated by David began this month. As usual the innovative production style won much acclaim and the first episode was watched by 5.3 million viewers.

Broadchurch

The 2013 series Broadchurch continued to roll out worldwide as it premiered in Norway and the Republic of Ireland this month, and it continued to air in South Africa, Switzerland and the Netherlands. There was awards success for the series when it won the TV Drama category in the 2014 South Bank Sky Arts Awards. Meanwhile Chris Chibnall was teasing about David’s involvement in series 2...

There were more nominations for Broadchurch in the National Television Awards. David appeared on the front cover of the Radio Times as he and Olivia Colman both made the shortlist for Best TV Detective and the final round of voting was launched. David’s former Doctor Who colleague Catherine Tate was quoted in the magazine explaining why viewers should vote for him. Unfortunately both Broadchurch stars lost out to Benedict Cumberbatch for Sherlock and Doctor Who scooped Best Drama.

Gracepoint
David was preparing to travel to Vancouver Island to begin work on the US Broadchurch remake, Gracepoint. The start date for the shoot was confirmed as Monday 27th January, and cast members were still signing on. The last announcements were Jessica Lucas as reporter Renee Clemons, Kendrick Sampson as Dean Iverson, Madalyn Horcher as Chloe Solano, Stephen Louis Grush as Vince Novik, Jack Irvine as Tom Miller and Georgina Rylance as Gemma Fisher. John Goldwyn joined the executive producer team alongside series creator Chris Chibnall and showrunners Dan Futterman and Anya Epstein. It was also confirmed that the remake would have a different ending to the original.

Preparations were being made around the Greater Victoria area for the start of the shoot, with locations prepared in Oak Bay Village and Sidney waterfront. David travelled to Canada as soon as Richard II had closed and was first photographed on set on January 31st

Audiobooks
David went into the studio to record the latest instalment in the Cressida Cowell How To Train Your Dragon series of books, How To Seize A Dragon’s Jewel
