Broadchurch 2: Even David Tennant & Olivia Colman Are In The Dark Says Chris Chibnall

Chris Chibnall has promised Broadchurch viewers big shocks when the series returns early next year. The creator of the award winning drama says that the follow up to the 2013 murder mystery will feature some heart-stopping twists and a shocking cliffhanger.

What's more, he explained, multiple endings were filmed so even stars David Tennant and Olivia Colman can't be sure of the outcome. All that is sure is that it won't start with another murder and will be more of a thriller than a whodunnit this time round. "Even David Tennant is in the dark," Chris revealed. "He was both offended and pleased. That’s how I like to keep them. You make a show and keep the secrets as long as you can. It’s like releasing an animal into the wild."

Chris was talking to the Mail on Sunday ahead of the launch in January of the second series of the hotly anticipated drama.

"Brace yourself for upset and shock," he said. "My 11-year-old son has been begging me but I won’t let him watch series two. It’s too upsetting. It features the cheekiest cliffhanger yet – a real shocker. I want people on the edge of their seats, gripped, and they will be. If you love these characters you will really, really want to watch every second."

The new series sees the return of David Tennant and Olivia Colman - it wouldn't have happened without them, assures Chris - alongside Andrew Buchan, Jodie Whittaker and Arthur Darvill, and some of the storyline will address the fallout from the capture of young Danny Latimer's killer. They are joined by a number of new characters played by Charlotte Rampling (as Jocelyn Knight, whose house, tantalisingly, appears in a map included in the Broadchurch novel long before the character name was revealed), Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Eve Myles and James D'Arcy. The trailer indicates a plot involving the abduction of two girls, and the recurring motif of bluebells has appeared in series publicity.

Broadchurch returns to ITV on Monday 5th January at 9pm.
