The Last September Starring David Tennant To Screen During BFI Maggie Smith Season

The 1999 film The Last September will screen at the BFI Southbank as part of a two-month long Maggie Smith season.

The versatile actress Dame Maggie Smith has starred in films ranging from Shakespeare to comedy, from period drama to fantasy feature, from romance to American classic, so it's only natural that the BFI should want to celebrate her work with a selection of her most loved productions.

The Last September stars David Tennant alongside Maggie Smith, Michael Gambon, Keeley Hawes, Richard Roxburgh, Gary Lydon and Jane Birkin. Adapted from the novel by Irish writer Elizabeth Bowen, the film is set in the 1920s on an estate near Cork during the Irish War of Independence. Michael Gambon and Maggie Smith play Sir Richard and Lady Myra Naylor, who preside over the great house and their guests while Irish republicanism rises around them. David Tennant plays a young English army captain, Gerald Colthurst, who falls in love with the Naylors' niece Lois (Keeley Hawes),who herself is attracted to the republican fighter and wanted killer Peter Connolly (Gary Lydon).

The Last September screens at the BFI Southbank on January 17th 2015 at 4.00pm GMT and on January 18th at 8.30pm. Tickets go on sale on 7th December at 11.30am.

Tickets are already on sale for some of the season's films screening in December, including The Prime Of Miss Jean Brodie, Othello and The VIPs. January's screenings include Harry Potter And The Philosopher's Stone, A Room With A View and Ladies In Lavender
