The Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special scooped the top award in the 2nd ECA Awards presented in London last night.
The ECA Awards are hosted by the Event Cinema Association and recognise achievements in admissions, programming and exhibition throughout the event cinema industry. The awards are decided by members' vote.
Doctor Who: The Day Of The Doctor starring Matt Smith, David Tennant and John Hurt was broadcast live to cinemas in over 90 territories worldwide on 23rd November 2013 and was also shown in follow up screenings in international locations. The special generated $10.2m at the box office.
The Day Of The Doctor won the Gold Best Box Office Award, presented to events that attract over 500,000 admissions. In the same category, the Bronze Award (100,000) was presented to five winners including Muse: Live At Rome Olympic Stadium and the Royal Opera House 2013 production of The Nutcracker.
Other categories in the Awards are for Excellence in Programming and Excellence in Exhibition.
The Doctor Who award was collected by Julia Nocciolino, the commercial manager for Doctor Who at BBC Worldwide.
