Canadian actor Kevin Zegers talks about the moral conflicts faced by his character Owen Burke in the upcoming TV series Gracepoint, which also stars David Tennant. Kevin plays frustrated journalist Owen Burke who sees the chance for his big break when tragedy strikes his hometown. Gracepoint is based on the multi-award winning UK series Broadchurch.
Owen is a lifelong resident of Gracepoint and a reporter on the Gracepoint Journal. His home life is complex; he has no father and his mother is chaotic, hopeless and possibly addicted to drugs, gambling or alcohol. Owen is close to his aunt Ellie Miller, his mum's sister, who also happens to be the assistant detective on the murder of young Danny Solano that has rocked the small town. It is this terrible event that causes Owen to feel the conflict between his career ambitions and his loyalty to his friends and family, and once the big city press arrive in town, notably in the shape of San Francisco Globe journalist Renee Clemons, Owen makes choices that are not necessarily in the best interests of the other residents of Gracepoint. Owen Burke is the equivalent character to Olly Stevens in Broadchurch, played by Jonathan Bailey.
He's ambiguous," says Kevin. "There's a little bit more too him than maybe you thought there was. He's a little bit of an orphan and kind of raised by the town, but in that is where his grey area is. He's not so well defined. He's a little more capable of doing bad things than maybe he lets on."
"The less you know about somebody," he adds, "The more scary stuff there might be to be revealed."

Based on the UK series Broadchurch, the new ten-part event series from Fox TV, Gracepoint explores how a small Californian coastal town is affected after a local boy, Danny Solano, is discovered murdered on the beach. David Tennant, plays Det. Emmett Carver, an American version of Broadchurch DI Alec Hardy, who is paired with local detective Ellie Miller (Anna Gunn) to solve the case. Meanwhile, suspicion and paranoia grip the formerly peaceful community. Producers say that the series will start off identically to the original but will so veer off in its own direction and will have a different ending. Other cast members include Nick Nolte, Michael Peña, Virginia Kull and Josh Hamilton.
