David Tennant was amongst a host of high profile guests at the opening night of Billie Piper's latest theatre project, Great Britain, at the National Theatre in London last night. He joined the likes of actors Zoe Wanamaker and Mark Gatiss in an audience which also included several high ranking members of the Metropolitan Police and various journalists from the tabloid press
The play, which has received stunning reviews from the press, is by Richard Bean and is described as fast and furious. It's an anarchic and foul-mouthed satire about the press, the police and the political establishment. Billie Piper plays Paige Britain, ambitious young news editor of The Free Press, a tabloid newspaper locked in a never-ending battle for more readers.
David was interviewed by BBC Radio 4 during the play's interval saying "It's a fantastic piece, Billie is of course magnificent."
The director of the play has called it a grotesque distortion of reality, when asked what he made of it David replied:
"I think the reality, as we've learnt from some of the stuff that's come out in the Old Bailey is pretty grotesque to start with isn't it? So I think that's interesting, just to see that reflected in a slightly heightened form, but then at other times you wonder how heightened it really is with some of the truths that were uncovered ."
