David Tennant Linked To Professionals Movie Remake

The Mirror are claiming that David Tennant is being considered for a role in the new cinematic adaptation of classic crime TV series The Professionals.

The ITV series ran for six years from 1977 and starred Lewis Collins and Martin Shaw in the roles of Bodie and Doyle. The film will be produced by Lionsgate UK and Eighth Wonder Pictures and by the original show's creator Brian Clemens, who is currently seeking the right stars to fill the roles of the iconic tough guy CI5 agents. He said:

“It’s going to be a big action movie. The script is done and now we are looking at casting. There are some big names being talked about, we just have to make sure they are available. Getting the right people is very important, because the show means a lot to the fans.”

Names mentioned so far include Daniel Craig, Jason Statham, Tom Hardy and even Tom Cruise to play Bodie, and David Tennant, Dominic West, Ben Whishaw and Benedict Cumberbatch for Doyle. So far there are no suggestions for their tough talking boss George Cowley, originally played by Gordon Jackson.

The action is to be updated to the present day, which sadly means waving goodbye to the duo's famous Ford Capri. Clemens explained,“It’s a huge task to shoot a period film – you’ll always get someone complaining that the wrong sort of phonebox was used in one scene or something. The show can easily fit into the modern day.”

Whether we will soon be seeing David pulling on the curly wig and driving at high speed through piles of cardboard boxes, however, does seem unlikely as the film is scheduled to start shooting before the end of the year, while David starts rehearsals for Richard II in late August and will be performing the play until January 2014.
