The New Doctor To Be Announced By Autumn

The new Doctor Who will not be announced until late summer at the earliest.

The Radio Times has learnt from the BBC that filming on the Doctor Who Christmas special will not take place until August or September, with work on the next series following straight after. The current plan is to reveal the identity of the actor playing the Twelfth Doctor just before filming starts. The Christmas special will be Matt Smith's final appearance in the role; prior to that he will be returning to screens in November in the 50th Anniversary Special alongside David Tennant.

The BBC have yet to comment themselves on any announcements or timings.

There is still great speculation over who will be picking up the TARDIS key when the Eleventh Doctor regenerates. Rory Kinnear, Ben Daniels, Julian Rhind-Tutt and Sheridan Smith are all being hotly tipped, while David Harewood and Craig Charles have both expressed an interest. Meanwhile, Idris Elba, Domhnall Gleeson, Dominic Cooper, Miranda Hart and Chris Addison have all ruled themselves out, saying that they had not been asked.

Just a couple of weeks ago, Steven Moffat said that they had only just started looking for Matt's replacement
