Olivia Colman has told the Mirror that the cast stayed
alcohol free after learning the identity of the Broadchurch killer to avoid revealing the drama’s big secret.
Olivia said of the cast, which also included David Tennant
and Arthur Darvill, “We all stayed on the soft drinks at parties as nobody
dared to cough up that information. You would have let down the team if it had
come out. It was nice to remind ourselves that as a nation we are fairly
intelligent viewers and we like intrigue.”
In another interview for What’s On TV, co-star Jonathan
Bailey, who played reporter Olly Stevens agreed, "I found it really hard
to keep the secret. And it brought about mild social anxiety, especially when
it was on TV. Because if you've had a little drink after a night out, that's
when the friends start trying to throw it into conversation.”
The Mirror also give speculative plot details of the second
series of Broadchurch. They claim
that series creator Chris Chibnall has said that the new story will be murder
free and the focus will be on how the shattered community rebuilds itself after
the event’s surrounding Danny Latimer’s death. Olivia Colman says of the sequel,
"“I thought maybe we should leave it alone,” said Olivia.
“But then I thought Chris’s idea sounded really good.”
