Digital Doctors For Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Show?

The Daily Star are claiming that past Doctors will appear in the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary special episode using digitally inserted footage from their original appearances.

At present, David Tennant is the only past incarnation of the Doctor known to be joining Matt Smith for the celebratory episode which is now being filmed in Wales and London. Most of the other surviving actors have stated that they have not been contacted to appear, while Christopher Eccleston has declined to take part. Only Paul McGann has hinted at a possible live appearance. The technique was previously used to insert footage of the original 1960s cast of Star Trek into an episode of spin-off series Deep Space Nine

The technique would be a solution to ensuring that the classic Doctors could appear looking as they did when they originally played the role. Tom Baker is now 79 and Colin Baker, Peter Davison and Sylvester McCoy are all in their 60s.

However, a note of caution - there has been no confirmation that the classic Doctors will appear in any form either from the BBC or from current showrunner Steven Moffat.

Confirmed cast for the 50th Anniversary episode include Matt Smith, David Tennant, Jenna-Louise Coleman, Billie Piper, John Hurt, Joanna Page, Ingrid Oliver and Jemma Redgrave.

  1. that's not the same. we don't want old footage of them. I'd rather this was fake and there are no past doctors than this

  2. now that's not fair... it was done very very well in the star trek episode they mention here. I think it would be alright in a similar context.

  3. I keep wondering, unless I forgot something that happened with them, since Piper and Tennant are the only confirmed previous companion and Doctor, if it's going to be the half human version of the Doctor and Rose. Throw in this deleted scene and they have their own TARDIS too.

    1. I have wondered the same thing. Two things that make me think it is the real doctor is the brown suit (the Meta-Crisis didn't have that suit) and that Joanna Page seems to be playing Queen Elizabeth. An encounter Ten referenced at the beginning of "The End of Time" (to the Ood). My hope is that they will have both Ten AND the Meta-Crisis with Rose. But that is mostly because I would really like to see how the whole Meta-Crisis and Rose thing worked out.

  4. It seems to me to be employment or age discrimination since they have previously done these multi-Doctor specials and explained the age differences. Why break with tradition now? Have the older actors done something to warrant being left out? I would seriously doubt such a claim, if it were made. All in all it seems down right shameful (if not legally faulty) of the BBC. Tom, Peter, Colin, Sylvester, and Paul: we will remember your contribution with respect and affection, even if the BBC fails to.

  5. I can understand doing this but isn't there a way to film the actors that are still alive today and just touch them up using SGI to make them look younger? I think it would make everything look more organic instead of wrestling and trying to make old footage work with this new episode. I'm extremely excited for the 50th either way!! =D

  6. I bet they're all there in one form or another. but since the story will really be an 8 yr celebration with a tiny portion paying tribute to the years before 2005 I won't be wasting my time.
This is NOT going to be a proper 50th. In fact I feel sick to my stomach as former Dr's are going to be forced to say and do things their characters would have NEVER done in a million years thanks to Moffats arrogance and incompetence and colossal lack of understanding of who the Dr character really is.
