John Barrowman will not be involved in the 50th
Anniversary episode of Doctor Who.
John tweeted confirmation, ending great speculation that he would be part of the cast following his hints that he was in discussions over something to do with the
anniversary celebrations a few weeks ago.
I will not be involved
in the 50th Anniversary Episode of Dr WHO. JB
So far no past Doctor Who cast members have been confirmed for the show, with most, including David Tennant, maintaining that they have not yet been contacted. David recently declared that he was fast giving up hope of appearing.
The 50th Anniversary episode starts filming in April. Current Doctor Matt Smith has said that he and new companion Jenna Louise Coleman will be appearing, but the only hint that he would give away about the plot was one word: "Paintings".
The new series of Doctor Who starring Matt Smith and Jenna
Louise Coleman starts on Saturday 30th March.
Well it would be a bit strange having "PAST" deoctors in the same episodes as the doctor is supposed to have regenerated into new doctors, so how can ONE doctor appear as different people all at once. Sounds like its going to be a good program though

The Five Doctors
The Two Doctors
Time Crash (On YouTube)
It's actually happened several times in Who History. Time being wibly wobbly and all that. In fact, Matt himself has filmed scenes with himself as "slightly future" Doctor, Like the First/Last Night specials. Not paying extra tribute to the history of who by involving the past Doctors would be a shame.
DeleteThere have been multiple Doctor specials in the past. One through Five for example. Those were great fun. Very sad about John not being involved :(
Deleteit was done before for the 25th anniversary when the first five doctors appeared though the first doctor was played by a different actor and the fourth doctor was shown to be trapped in a time vortex. Doctors one, two, three and five were shown on screen together at the same time.
DeleteUmmmmm... You're new to Doctor Who I take it? He's encountered his past selves at just about every major anniversary and then some. See: The Three Doctors, The Five Doctors,The Two Doctors, and Time Crash in the TV series, and countless times in the audio and print adventures. It's actually a pretty big FU to the fans if they don't do it for the 50th.
DeleteThere has been several shows where multiple doctors appeared on screen together. Always makes for a fun episode. Check out some of the Classic Who on Netflix. :)
DeleteThe Two Doctors, The Three Doctors, and The Five Doctors have all done this type of storyline in the past.
DeleteThey've done it before though, so it wouldn't be a stretch to think that they could do it again.
DeleteTime travel...they did it all the time in the classic series and even once with 10 and 5 in time crash
DeleteActually, quite a few of the Doctors have reappeared beside their previous incarnations. The Tenth Anniversary of Doctor Who was "The Three Doctors" when the First, Second, and Third Doctors all showed up in a single serial (along with Companion Jo Grant and the Brigadier). The Twentieth Anniversary of Doctor Who was "The Five Doctors" with the First, Second, Third, Fourth, and Fifth Doctors (alongside Romana II, Sarah Jane Smith, the Brigadier, Susan, Teagan, and Turlough). Also, the Fifth Doctor appeared beside the Tenth in the between season short "Time Crash". In fact, it is so much of a thing for previous doctors to appear beside their current counterparts that Neil Gaiman stated in an interview that his dream for the 50th Anniversary would be the Eleven Doctors. Unfortunately, given the fact that a few of the older actors who have played in Doctor Who are now sadly deceased, this will not be possible.

Would't be the first time. There are a couple of original episodes where 3 and 5 incarnations appeared in one show.
DeleteSeriously?

They've already done specials involving past doctors twice. Both were classic Dr. Who and they were called The Three Doctors and The Five Doctors respectively. Just saying
DeleteThey've done it in at least 3 eps so far, "The Three Doctors" with 1-3 "The Five Doctors" with 1-5 and "The 2 doctors" with 2 and ...I think it was 6.
DeleteCheck your facts, it's happened before.
DeleteTennant could definitely appear as it wouldn't be the first time someone had gone into a parallel universe, and if you remember, in the end of the 4th season a second version of Tennant did just that with Billie Piper. It wouldn't surprise me, if they found some way of doing it with the others as well though.
DeleteHaving past doctors appear together is nothing new on Doctor Who. The regenerate, but occasionally doctors from different points in time converge together for a mission. They usually do it around big anniversaries.
DeleteLOL I was going to point those episodes myself... It seems that newer generation of Doctor Who needs to watch the classic episodes, as having more than 1 doctor in an episode is always exciting and mind blowing, as all doctors regeneration tends to argue more among themselves lol...
DeletePlus David Tennant is by far a better Doctor then Matt Smith... but that's my opinion, so many may not agree :)
Nooooooooooooo!!!! I want my Capt. Jack!!!! :(
ReplyDeleteI'm sure they could work out a delayed response paradox excuse if they wanted past favorites appearing. I mean it is Dr. Who. They have redefined what was considered normal t.v. programing. It's a shame that the other Doctors and companions are not being included. They did after all help make it great. How does Captain Jack not get a invite?
ReplyDeleteThe Three Doctors and The Five Doctors are prevous episode in which several Doctors are present incarnations of The Doctor is present at the same time. It has been done before and I hope to God it happens again.
ReplyDeleteI would imagine flashbacks, etc., but if it is "paintings," I wonder if it could possibly be "living" "paintings."
ReplyDeleteObviously you have no idea about past anniversary specials.....
ReplyDeleteIt's been done before, Stephen.
ReplyDeletehttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doctor_Who#Meetings_of_past_and_present_incarnations
basically it will just be a normal episode of DW then nothing at all special
ReplyDeleteStephen have you not watched the other anniversary episodes?? Even if you are not a fan of classic DW (I obviously am a fan lol) they are worth a watch.
ReplyDeleteWell, David Tennant *could* since there were 2, the doppelganger who stayed with Rose and the original Doctor.... I'd kind of like to see what Rose and Doppelganger Who are up to!
ReplyDeletebecause there have been special episodes of mutiple incarnations of the Doctor appearing in the same episode before. its a temporal anomaly that doesn't happen often, but it does happen. like the special where the 10th Doctor met the 5th Doctor.
ReplyDeleteIt's been done before. 'The Three Doctors' was the first time, having the first, second, and third Doctors meet. Remember, with time travel, you can justify just about anything. :)
ReplyDeleteRemember that time is not linear. So in fact, all doctors could technically appear at the same time in history because it would be different points in each timeline. Its like how (spoilers) 11 was able to be at his own death twice. One was past and one was present.
ReplyDeleteWhat? Are you serious? It has been done a few times already. The 2 Doctors, the 3 Doctors, and the amazing 5 Doctors episodes were wonderful. They should definitely do another episode like it.
ReplyDeleteThey have done amazing episodes in the past with multiple past doctors. I would suggest looking up original Dr. Who episodes, such as The Five Doctors, before thinking it would be strange. It would be fitting to see them bring back Tennant, as he is the reason the show became popular again. I am very concerned that SM is not going to give proper credit to the shows past and those who worked hard to get it to where it is today.
ReplyDeleteStephen - They've had multiple Doctors together before, in Classic Who and in the prequel filmed for Children in Need with Tennant and Davidson, so it wouldn't be the first time it's happened.
ReplyDeleteAs for Barrowman, I'm a little in shock, considering Moffat confirmed that he would be back on twitter.
"The Five Doctors" was the 20th Anniversary special and featured the first five Doctors in the same story (although William Hartnell had passed away and the first Doctor was portrayed by Richard Hurndall in that story, and Tom Baker appeared only as clips from the unaired story "Shada"). There have also been other stories featuring more than one Doctor ("The Three Doctors" in 1972 and "The Two Doctors" in 1985). It wouldn't be unthinkable to have more than one Doctor in the 50th Anniversary, although as stated above, David Tennant hasn't been approached to reprise his role as yet.
ReplyDeleteStephen they had a bunch of episodes where it included multiple doctors, non candid and candid. The 3 doctors, the 5 doctors, etc.
ReplyDeleteI would love to see all past companions and doctors in there!
ReplyDeleteIt's happened several times before. Look up "The Three Doctors" and "The Five Doctors". They did this quite a bit in the classic series.
ReplyDeleteI am hoping for Harry Potter style moving paintings of past doctors and companions :)
ReplyDeleteThey have had past Doctors together before. They had the first three Doctors together in an episode, and they also had the first five Doctors together in an episode (though the first one was played by a different actor, seeing as the original actor died). I think it would be awesome if they brought back the three Doctors of the new age Doctor Who and had them play together. But, I guess if they already have the script written, then they have contacted all the major actors that they need.
ReplyDeleteSee the following episodes: The Three Doctors, The Five Doctors, The Two Doctors, and the 2007 short Time Crash.
ReplyDeleteIt would make more sense for Captain Jack to appear than David Tennant. I mean, I love David Tennant as furiously as any Doctor Who fan. But if he just happened to appear alongside Matt Smith, even for an anniversary, the very well continuity that I appreciate so much about this show would be tainted. People would be looking at it as if it were a riddle forever and ever because..well..that's what Doctor Who fans do (in general.)
ReplyDeletewell it wouldn't be the first time - so I doubt it.
DeleteDavid could be back as there is still the human 'copy' in the other universe with Rose Tyler and her parents
DeleteHey, Stephen, I don't think enough people have yet told you that it has been done before. :)
ReplyDeleteHonestly, I don't believe anything that is said/tweeted/confirmed/unconfirmed on the subject of the 50th anniversary.
ReplyDeleteAs I recall the BBC asked David Morrissey to keep up the illusion of him being the Eleventh Doctor while filming The Next Doctor.
First rule: The Doctor lies
Second rule: The Doctor Who production team lies.
We just will have to wait and be surprised.
Neil would have made a fantastic Doctor, was hoping it was going to be him as 11.
DeleteIt's possible that they made him lie to surprise us.
ReplyDeleteSo it sounds like the 50th special is just going to be another chance for Moffat to glorify himself and his version of the series? Considering how many of the actors who have played past Doctors have shown interest in being in the 50th anniversary episode, Moffat is a selfish idiot for not including them.
ReplyDeleteThis is horrible news! I have the dreadful feeling that I am going to be horribly disappointed in the 50th special. No Captain Jack...Tenth Doctor...nope, I can't see this being anything other than a typical episode if this news is true.
ReplyDeleteThe weird thing is that Moffat wrote one of the best Doctor-meets-Doctor episodes (Time Crash) and that Captain Jack is a Moffat creation! While I am not completely despairing of there being a multi-Doctor episode for the 50th, I think this is a pretty bad blow for anyone thinking that the anniversary special will be...special.
ReplyDeleteIf this is true, that makes this season officially over. This season has been a snorefest and to exclude key people from the 50th would be a mistake of dynamic purportions. I have no problems stopping watching this train wreck.
ReplyDeleteMoffat has shown that he doesn´t care for any character except River Song. Seasons 4, 5 and 6 were essentially the River Song Show, guest starring the Doctor.
ReplyDeleteBy putting her up to be the oh so very most special person in all the Doctor´s lives ever, he has demonstrated his complete disregard for any previous companion in the show´s 50 year continuity. As he is already starting to set up Oswin as the next companion who is oh so very special, he is probably planning the big River/Clara standoff for the anniversary episode. Catfight over who is more special.
One thing I like about pre-Moffat Doctor Who is that unlike most other sci fi series, adventures are not limited to trained professionals (army, space fleet, etc.). Okay, the Doctor worked with UNIT, but more often than not, his companions were everyday people - a journalist, a temp, a shop assistant, a med student, teachers and a pupil, a stewardess, a senior citizen etc.. They rose to the challenge, grew with it. They were not born/created to be special. The show gave you the feeling that you, too, could be whisked off to an adventure if your paths happened to cross those of the TARDIS. Moffat has taken this away by making every companion who stayed for more than one or two standalone episodes "special" so far: Amy (the crack), Rory (who won´t die), River, and now Oswin. :-(
My dream 50th would be 10.2 and Rose, and Nine and captain Jack, and the fab Four (that's Tom not the Beatles).
